Today more than 70 million cases of Merlot produced in Pomerol each year have been noted. Considering there are more than 22 thousand vineyards in Bordeaux, covering approximately 280 thousand acres of land or 13 acres of land per vineyard, this is not as difficult as it sounds. Great wine is produced from all of these different vineyards. Many of these vineyards actually produce and sell their own wine while the rest of the vineyards sell their wine through one of the many cooperatives located in this region.

60 different wine appellations that range from fair to world class and everything in between can be found in this area. This wine is very affordable and the recipes have not changed much as many of these wines date back to 1855.

Major red grape that comes from Bordeaux is actually Merlot. A distant second place goes to Cabernet Sauvignon. Some other important red grape varieties are also found in this area but they are not nearly as popular as Merlot. It is interesting to know that Pomerol region of Bordeaux is a small, rural area known primarily for it’s red wine production.

Tourism in Pomerol

Pomerol’s main tourist attractions are the wine chateaux. It is quite surprising that for this reason, the world famous Chateau Petrus is not all that special to look at. If many are to be believed then it is far from being spectacular. It is one of those cases in which one cannot judge the book by its cover. Lastly this region is brimming with other sights to see as well.
