About Last of The Summer Wine

United Kingdom’s longest running sitcom title is Last Of The Summer Wine, which is written by Roy Clarke, its 28th series is being broadcast by the BBC as of July 2007. Lives of three retired men are being showcased by Last of the Summer Wine. The different worldview points from these three men leads to comic tension. Lower class Compo, middle class Norman and a third man, who through the years has been played by a variety of different people, is what the trio all about. Filled with characters of the local scene, the series of Last of the Summer wine has most often become an ensemble piece. The sitcom made fourteenth in 2004 in the BBC poll to find Britain’s Best Comedies.
Comedies have always been an unattached part of British movies. Even though there are some points on which the critics criticized the movie. But over all, it has been a great movie.
What The Critics Say
The critics have been praising Last of the Summer Wine for portraying older people in a positive and active fashion, as opposed to other shows that show the stereotypical retired old person. The show got praises for being family friendly and also for its clever and philosophical writing. On the other hand, very recently the show got criticism for being too long and formulaic. The critics whoso claim says that there are way too many plotlines to follow and the cast are too big.
The Two Main Characters
Filming of Last of the Summer Wine is done in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Peter Sallis plays a normal Clegg, or Cleggy, a shy widower. Bill Owen plays small and scruffy, William “Compo” Simmonite. Campo’s love interest is played by Kathy Staff is another character, frumpy Nora Batty.
The Third Ever Changing Member
As stated above, the third member keeps changing often as the series continues. Typically the other two usually mocks an authoritarian figure the third character. Originally the third character was Cyril Blamire played by Michael Bates. Cyril was usually embarrassed by Compo’s unkempt personal hygiene and so he always wanted to better himself. Brian Wilde plays a pompous ex-military Corporal as Walter “Foggy” Dewhurst. Following that Michael Aldridge plays inventor Seymour Utterthwaite, the brother of Edie Pegden, played by Thora Hird. Thereafter-Foggy returns. As of today, the third character is played by Herbert “Truly” Truelove, a retired police office played by Frank Thornton.
DVD’s are available for purchase; one can buy series one through six on DVD.
Thus, Last of The Summer Wine is a successful collection based on story of three men. This is a movie you must not miss. It is truly awesome.
