August 15, 2008
The coffee tree bears cherries, which are the fruits from which the seeds are obtained. In fact, the coffee beans and coffee seeds are same. Normally the fruits are produced after the blooming in most of the plants. However, in case of coffee plants the fruits that are ripped and unripe are produced at the same time. For making coffee, the ripped coffee beans are picked up separately and therefore the labor of the workers is considerably increased. Coffee beans are available in four basic types like the Arabica, Liberica, Excelsa and the Robusta. However, the types of the beans largely depend up on form which species of plants are they hand picked.
Beans Of Arabica
Coffea Arabica is the botanical name of the Arabica coffee plant, from where the Arabica coffee beans are obtained. Their plants have leaves, which are wavy on its outline, thin and light green in color. Yemen and Ethiopia are the native places of these coffee plants. Dry beans from the Arabica coffee plants, up to a thousand are produced on an average during a single harvest from one hectare of land on which they are grown. The Arabica coffee plants produce beans which has a characteristic aroma, which is refined, famous acidic flavor that is delicate, and a desirable aftertaste of caramel. The traditional Ethiopian variety of coffee is how it is known. As compared to other varieties of coffee that is produced for commercial purpose, the content of caffeine is less in the Arabica coffee beans.
Coffee Beans Of Liberica
The Arabica coffee has a competitor, which is the Liberica coffee in respect to aroma and taste. This is because the beans are recognized and known for there characteristic aroma and taste that is excitingly strong one. The name itself gives a clear indication about its native place, which is Liberia. There berries are of large size, have thick leaves, apart from they being found in clusters and have a rounded growth. Due to the lower demand of the Liberica coffee, they are grown mainly in the area of Malaysia and west of Africa, but on a smaller scale.
Coffee Beans Of Excelsa
The Excelsa coffee plant produces the Excelsa coffee beans, from where they are hand picked. During the younger growth stage, this plant bears bronze violet colored leaves and are resistant to disease. Coffee blends are produced using the Excelsa coffee beans, especially for commercial use, just the way Robusta beans are used. There such use is mainly because of there earthy and smoky flavor, which has a low demand.
Beans Of Robusta
The Robusta coffee plant is also known by the name of Coffea Robusta. An umbrella- shaped plant, whose leaves have wavier outline in comparison to Arabica plant, is how the coffee plant of Robusta grows. It was found at the end of 19th century for the first time in the region of Congo. Out of all the coffee consumption in the world, this one contributes about 25 to 40 percent alone. The coffee growers like it, especially for its normal growth what requires nothing but a mild environment. Although the quality of the Robusta coffee beans is inferior to the Arabica coffee, not to forget that this coffee is cheaper and easy of grow. However, compared to the Arabica beans, the quality of the Robusta beans grown on per hectare is higher in quality; and some of the varieties are stronger in flavor. For making commercial blends of coffee and for instant coffee processing the Robusta coffee beans are used.
